Garaway Cross Country to host Scallywag Sprint September 18

As a way to encourage those who enjoy the sport of running and give area children a taste of the sport, the Garaway Cross Country team is sponsoring the Garaway Scallywag Sprint on Saturday, September 18. “It was first started as an alumni 5k and it was the last race of the day before the elementary race,” explained Garaway Cross Country coach Chuck Zobel of how the race began. And now with thought and input from the community as well as leaders in the world of running in Tuscarawas County, some changes have been made - with the best interest of runners in mind. The 5k race, now part of the Tuscarawas Valley Challenge series, will start at 9 a.m. There will be awards to the top three men and women finishers overall as well as the top three men and women in each age group. Pirates run jets out of fuel, post first win of season

While Garaway was able to steal away a 33 - 7 victory over Union Local last weekend, the thievery didn’t stop there. Senior Zach Renner left Belmont County with Union Local’s nickname too, leaving the team in need of a new mascot. Union Local claims “Jets” as its nickname, but Renner used his toughness and speed to “jet” past the host team as he rushed for 163 yards on 17 carries, had rushing touchdowns of 33 and 17 yards, caught a 15-yard touchdown pass and generally wreaked havoc on the Union Local passing attack that found the cornerback looking down the barrel of 55 Kyle Copeland passes for the hosts. “I thought this would be a really tough game, but in the second half we stepped up and did what we were supposed to do,” said Renner, who had 119 of his yards in the second half as...
