Garaway wrestlers capture IVC
By Jeffery Williams

To slay the dragon, Garaway needed a monster effort.
They got it from top to bottom.
And down went the Sandy Valley dragon.
Garaway became the first Inter-Valley Conference school other than Sandy Valley to win a league championship in 10 years when they earned the IVC Tournament title Saturday, besting the second-place Cardinals 397-344. Newcomerstown (269) was third, Ridgewood (236) was fourth, Malvern (206) was fifth and Tuscarawas Central Catholic was sixth with 108 points.
“Every person on our team, everybody had a role to play,” head coach Sedric Gerber, winner of the Coach of the Year, said. “Everyone either met their goal or exceeded it and I couldn’t be more proud of their efforts. I truly believe this was a team effort.”
The Pirates held the lead after each round, prompting Gerber to look tense as the final round started. “I wish it was done,” he said simply as his team led by one point after the first and second rounds, five after the third round and 15 points heading into the finals.
“There have been many tournaments where we came close but we never put five rounds together,” Gerber said. “Our kids fought so hard through five rounds and in every round they fought to win and we were able to hold on.”
Veteran Sandy Valley coach John Groff, head coach for all 10 of the past decade’s victories, said the Pirates were tough.
“We didn’t wrestle our best today,” Groff said. “Garaway wrestled well today, you can’t take anything away from them.”
The Pirates got individual titles from Jesse Blake (126), Jordan Blake (145), A.J. Frey (152), Steven Farrow (182) and Brady Gump (220).
Farrow, a state qualifier a year ago, defeated 2-time state qualifier Sam Groff of Sandy Valley in a hotly-contested 4-3 decision. For his effort, he was named Wrestler of the Year.
“That was the icing on the cake for yesterday,” Gerber said of Farrow’s big win. “He wrestled such a smart match and he was all about offense. He was bound and determined not to make a mistake and he was constantly on the attack.”
Frey was the surprise champion as he entered the tournament seeded fifth with his 7-13 record. All he did was go through unscathed.
“It felt really, really good, it was a great opportunity,” Frey said of his title. “I worked hard and did everything I could. Plus, being around the guys at practice – they’re a good group of guys to be around like Cody Schlabach and Steven Farrow. They’re all-around great guys and I love ’em like brothers. All of our older guys have been a huge help to me as a wrestler.”
“We knew what kind of wrestler A.J. was and we knew he had potential,” Gerber said. “Yesterday he just let it all hang out and came out as the no. 5 seed and he wanted to be champ. For him only being a sophomore it’s amazing. Some switch went off in him and he brought it to the mats on Saturday.”
Frey sent back kudos to his head coach, along with assistant coach Alan Patterson.
“Their energy is great and they fire us up,” Frey said. “They are the best wrestling coaches you could ever ask for.”
Frey may have been looking for some payback after suffering a broken nose and concussion when the Pirates lost a dual to Sandy Valley earlier in the season.
“It felt good to beat Sandy Valley,” he said with a laugh.
Earning runner-up finishes for the Pirates were Ethan Slentz (132), Cody Schlabach (138) and 285-pounder Ben Sexton.
Third-place finishes went to Logan Hershberger (113) and Clint Miller (195) while Austin Kirk (160) took fourth.
Up next the Pirates will travel to the Division III?Sectional Tournament set for this weekend - Friday, February 17 and Saturday, February 18 at Cardington-Lincoln High School in Cardington. Participating schools include: Bishop Ready, Cardington-Lincoln, Centerburg, Coshocton, Delaware Christian, Elgin, Garaway, Liberty Union, Mount Gilead, Newark Catholic, Newcomerstown, Northmor, Northridge (Johnstown), Pleasant, and Ridgewood. From there, four individuals in each weight class will qualify to go on to the District Tournament.
